Owning several funds can create the appearance of diversification while leaving the portfolio dependent on one asset class, market segment or economic outcome. A look-through allocation asks what the household actually owns and what role each exposure is meant to play.
Count exposures and roles, not product names
Start with asset classes, then examine concentration within them. Several diversified-equity funds may still share many large holdings. A debt allocation may carry more credit or duration risk than its stable-looking label suggests.
Diversification is not about owning everything. It is about avoiding accidental dependence on one source of return or one point of failure while keeping the portfolio understandable.

Ask what each allocation contributes—and what can go wrong
Portfolio components compared by intended role and the main question raised by their concentration or behaviour.
| Exposure | Illustrative amount | Possible role | Risk question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic equity | ₹14 lakh | Long-term growth | Is one market and equity risk dominating the plan? |
| High-quality debt | ₹4 lakh | Stability / known needs | Do duration and access match the goal? |
| Cash | ₹1 lakh | Immediate liquidity | Is it sufficient for the assigned need? |
| Gold | ₹1 lakh | Diversifying exposure | How volatile and liquid is the chosen form? |
Rebalance with a purpose, not a prediction
A review can compare the current look-through allocation with the roles agreed for each goal. If market movement or new contributions shift those roles materially, rebalancing may be discussed alongside costs, taxes, exit conditions and changing household needs.
The aim is not to anticipate the next market winner. It is to keep the portfolio’s risks connected to the household’s capacity, horizon and need for liquidity.
Diversification manages concentration; it does not remove loss
