Plan labels and service are different questions

Direct, regular and advisory: separate the labels from the service

A neutral primer on plan labels, costs and the questions to ask about the support you actually receive.

Fund basics

Three distinct arrangements compared by cost, investor responsibility and the service actually provided.

Plan labels describe how a mutual fund investment is arranged. They should be understood alongside costs, responsibilities and the service relationship around the decision.

Understand what the labels describe

Direct and regular plans are different plan options within a scheme. Their expense structures differ because the distribution arrangement differs. Advisory is a broader description of a service relationship and should not be treated as another plan label.

Compare the whole arrangement

Cost matters, but a useful comparison also asks who is responsible for research, suitability, execution, records and ongoing review. Be precise about which services are included, how they are paid for and what you remain responsible for doing.

  • Which charges apply and where are they disclosed?
  • What support is included before and after the transaction?
  • How are conflicts, if any, explained?

Keep the plan label and the service relationship separate

A comparison framework for clarifying responsibility, cost disclosure and the support actually included.

Questions to document for three different arrangements
ArrangementWhat the label describesResponsibility to clarifyEvidence to retain
Direct planA scheme plan optionWho researches, selects and reviews?Scheme documents and direct-plan costs
Regular planA scheme plan option linked to distributionWhat support is provided, and by whom?Scheme documents, regular-plan costs and service disclosure
Advisory serviceA service relationship, not another plan labelWhat advice, monitoring and execution are in scope?Written scope, fee and conflict disclosures

A label alone does not establish suitability or service quality. Read the relevant documents and confirm the arrangement in writing.

Ask for clear disclosure

You should be able to understand the capacity in which a person or platform is acting, the compensation model and the limits of the service. If the explanation is unclear, pause and ask for it in writing.

Match the service to the need

Different investors may value different levels of support. The relevant question is not which label wins in isolation, but which transparent arrangement fits your needs and the work you want help with.

This article explains general distinctions only and is not a recommendation of a plan or service model.
